Why We Only Sleep in Family Homes

Nandini Rao · 20 Jun 2026

There is a moment on every good journey when the place stops performing for you. It usually happens around food. A family in Pin Valley doesn't cook you their version of what tourists want — they cook dinner, and you're in it.

We made a decision early: wherever we can, Wandrcrew travellers sleep in family homes. Not because it's cheaper, and certainly not because it's easier to organise. Because the economics of travel should reach the people who make a place worth visiting, and because the alternative — a corridor of identical rooms — teaches you nothing.

The ledger matters. Roughly forty percent of your trip cost on our homestay journeys lands directly with host families, village guides and local drivers. That's a child's school year, a new greenhouse, a reason to stay in the village rather than leave for the city.

But honestly, we'd do it for the mornings alone. Waking to the smell of woodsmoke and fresh bread beats a hotel buffet every single time.
